Malaysia Redux

Well it is a new year and a quarter of the century gone by. Three years since my last post - that went fast and lots going on as does happen in life. But this is a going back in time quite a ways. I could not locate any images of my trip back to the Cameron Highlands when I was living in Indo.  We were talking about it over our Christmas visit. We lived there when I was little. So after a bit of digging around I located the files.

Waterfall a bit up into the forest a ways behind the old campus. Dalat School leased the property to move the school to Malaysia during the Vietnam War and stayed until its move to Penang. It is now, or at least when I revisited, a hotel, but some of the what was there when we lived at the school remains.

View of the Cameron Highlands from our hotel.

Highest point in the highlands. Puncak Brinchang - Mt Brinchang.

At the top of Brinchang.

Tea plantations of the Cameron Highlands - primary economic pursuit of the Brits during colonialism.

Proper tea at the Smokehouse - Brit era club.

Tea plantation complex. Housing for the workers - primarily from Indo -  in the blue structures.

In a tea tree! If left uncultivated, the bushes grow rather large, which makes for inefficient tea leaf harvesting.

Looking down the road from the town of Tanah Rata.

Hotel that replaced the school.

Former school area from another perspective.

Mosque up on the hill overlooking our school. I do have memory of the mosque, mostly because of the call to prayer that I must have heard quite often.

At the blue mosque up the hill.

Teachers housing up the hill behind the school - another memory. When I walked around the backside of the hotel, I recognized these houses immediately as where we lived. They are used for living quarters of the management workers at the hotel.

My house.

View of the former school complex and hotel in the background. I think this might be the little community where workers at the school lived.

And a few random ones for those who might be familiar with the area and the school.

Cameron Highlands.

At the Smokehouse.

I think this is the police station that was next to the campus.

This is the police station. Some of the police would have a routine presence at the school and became friends with staff and students.

Butterfly gardens - just realized this was in KL ....

Butterflies at the butterfly gardens.
